Description

Pottery course on wheel-throwing with Porcelain

2 Parts consisting of Total 10 sessions (3.0 hours per session)

Suitable for: Beginners with no prior experience in pottery, some experience with throwing with other clays, including hobbyist.

The beginner course is suitable for anyone interested in throwing with porcelain.

Individuals who have taken a beginner’s course in wheel-throwing using other types of clay, such as stoneware or earthenware, will have an advantage in working with porcelain – they will have already learned the basic skills of wedging, centring, and shaping clay on the potter’s wheel, which is fundamental to working with any clay.

Specializing in Porcelain Clay

The beginner course on throwing with porcelain is a specialized pottery course that uses porcelain clay to create functional and decorative ceramic pieces. Porcelain is a type of clay known for its translucency, strength, and beauty. It is also considered one of the most challenging types of clay to work with due to its high plasticity and sensitivity to temperature and humidity changes.

The course begins with an introduction to porcelain clay and the tools used in throwing with porcelain. Students will learn how to prepare the clay for throwing, including wedging and centring the clay on the wheel.

They will also be introduced to techniques for shaping the porcelain clay, including pulling it up and shaping it using various tools.

Challenge of Porcelain Clay

One of the main challenges in working with porcelain is its sensitivity to changes in temperature and humidity. The course covers the techniques for controlling the moisture content of the clay during the throwing process and understanding the porcelain’s temperament until the final process.

As the course progresses, students will be introduced to more advanced techniques for working with porcelain. Students will learn how to use various tools to create textures and patterns on the surface of the porcelain, such as ribbing and carving tools.

Another critical aspect of working with porcelain is the firing process. Porcelain requires a high-temperature firing to achieve its translucency and strength. The course covers the basic understanding of firing porcelain, including the types of kilns used and the firing schedules required to achieve the desired results. For more in-depth learning on firing & glazes, students can explore the Masterclass on Firing & Glazes Preparation<coming in Oct>.

In addition to the technical skills required for working with porcelain, the course also covers the creative aspects of pottery making. Students will learn about the design principles used in pottery making, such as form, function, and aesthetics. They will also be introduced to various decorative techniques, such as glazing, to add colour and texture to their pieces.

Community Building & Knowledge Sharing
